A Vision Shaped by the Land

Set within the natural landscape of the Gila River Indian Community, Whirlwind Golf Club—home to the Devil’s Claw and Cattail courses—anchors a world‑class resort destination. Developed in collaboration with renowned resort planner WATG, the project was envisioned as an authentic desert retreat that reflects both the character of the land and the heritage of the community.

During the routing of the Cattail Course, Gary toured the property with Tribal Elders to better understand the cultural significance of the native vegetation. Those conversations informed a comprehensive salvage and mitigation plan designed to respect and preserve the landscape. One story in particular has stayed with him: a large mesquite tree once served as a place where community members would hang their sport coats before traveling into Phoenix—a quiet reminder of the land’s connection to daily life and tradition.

Honoring Culture Through Design

Located just south of Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport in the foothills of the Sierra Estrella Mountains, Whirlwind Golf Club offers a distinctly Southwestern golf experience. Every element of the design reflects the cultural heritage of the Gila River Indian Community, creating a course environment that feels both meaningful and memorable.

A Pair of Award-Winning Courses

Both the Devil’s Claw and Cattail courses are consistently ranked among Arizona’s “Best You Can Play.” Their layouts showcase the natural beauty of the region—cottonwood, mesquite, saguaro, and palo verde trees woven through rolling terrain, native grasses, and expansive desert vistas.

A Stage for Championship Golf

Whirlwind has welcomed many of the world’s top players, hosting events for the LPGA, PGA of America, USGA, and the Nationwide (Web.com) Tour’s Gila River Golf Classic, televised on The Golf Channel. Its reputation as a premier tournament venue continues to elevate the club’s standing in the golf world.
